The Humane Society of the United States claims an undercover investigation of a Minnesota poultry processing facility shows inhumane treatment of chickens.
The video was taken at Butterfield Foods company in Butterfield southwest of Minneapolis. HSUS says birds there are sometime subjected to scalding while still alive. 85,000 birds a day are processed at that facility. Steve Olson, Executive Director of the Minnesota Chicken and Egg Association says while he hasn’t seen the video says most processors do the right and proper thing when processing chickens.
Olson says as far as humane treatment of chickens goes, the industry is well regulated.
Olson says in addition the company in question Butterfield Foods is doing its own internal investigation into what happened. He says education efforts are ongoing in Minnesota to help producers and processors use the proper practices.
