A possible west coast shipping strike may interrupt U-S exports. Mike Steenhoek, executive director with the Soy Transportation Coalition has been moderating the actions. He says union workers that work on the shipping docks and load the ships want better wages and better working conditions. Their contract expired a few months ago, however, they continue to work while negotiating with the shipping companies, but tension are growing.
Steenhoek says during the COVID era, there was a slowdown at the docks, and it created shipping delays and supply chain shortage issues. He says nobody wants to see that happened again. Steenhoek says most grain and soybean exports won’t be affected since those products are shipped by bulk. However, he says meat products may be impacted by the possible strike.
