One point two billion dollars of milk exports from the U.S. to Mexico are at risk as Mexico appears to be seeking new trading partners. The Trump administration has made trade relations uneasy with Mexico and the fact they are the number one U.S. customer for dairy products is bringing concerns. Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation says the U.S. has competition for that Mexican market.

He says when NAFTA was first put together, Canada’s supply management system presented a problem, so the U.S. turned to Mexico which became our number one export market for dairy.

Galen says as negotiators work on redoing NAFTA, the U.S. needs to be at the table in order to access important agricultural markets.

Mexico is currently in talks with New Zealand in purchasing their dairy products.
