Tomorrow (Saturday) is the 23rd anniversary of the nation’s largest food drive, and Feeding South Dakota is hoping to break their record. The National Association of letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger food drive collected over 72 million pounds of food last year across America, and Feeding South Dakota Development Associate, Jennifer Stensaas, says the goal for the Sioux Falls area is ninety thousand pounds of food this year…
The most food collected in the Sioux Falls area previously is eighty six thousand pounds. The drive is happening across the state, and community members are asked to participate in the drive by leaving non-perishable food items, soap, diapers, and other donations by their mailboxes early tomorrow (Saturday) morning for volunteers to pick up and deliver to local food distribution centers. Stensaas says the drive comes at a critical time for food pantries everywhere…
She says that one in 8 people in South Dakota are food insecure, and Feeding South Dakota distributes about seventy thousand pounds of food every month.
