On Wednesday South Dakota elected officials faced crossover day. This is the hard deadline when all bills need to clear in their original chamber of origin or die. Matt Bogue, Lobbyist for South Dakota Farm Bureau says that although the day was long, Farm Bureau’s agenda so far has gone according to plan.
Bogue noted some of the advancing bills agriculture lobbyists and interests are still watching.
According to Bogue they are also tracking HB 1096. The bill would prohibit USDA from mandating electronic identification of livestock but needs more refinement or it will lose support.
In the past USDA had proposed a National Animal Identification System, which was largely opposed by farm groups in the state. South Dakota Legislative session adjourns March 7th.
