Backers of a proposed casino in Yankton are betting on its future and it could be on the ballot this fall. A constitutional change would be needed to approve any new gaming license outside of those already allowed in places like Deadwood or on reservations.
Senate Joint Resolution 9 (SJR-9) calls for voters to approve one gaming license to be issued by the state to a nonprofit entity for the casino within the city limits of Yankton.
Former legislator Nick Moser is lobbying for the proposal, and says they are dealing with opposition now….
Moser says there are other concerns….
Opponents say South Dakota doesn’t need any new casinos to add to the problems they say come with gaming, like gambling addiction and other social concerns. Norman Woods with the Family Heritage Alliance says they are opposed…..
Woods says casino backers should go to the people for support…
The resolution will be heard in committee Tuesday morning in Pierre.
