Backers of the Port Yankton project are finalizing plans to start a petition drive to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November of 2020.
Nancy Wenande, C.E.O. of Yankton Area Progressive Growth, says the proposed amendment may be different than the one that was rejected by the legislature…
Wenande says it will be a major effort to get the signatures needed….
There was strong opposition from tribes that run casinos. Wenande says they are open to cooperation….
While about thirty four thousand signatures are needed, Wenande says they want to get well over forty thousand. She says it could cost over two hundred thousand dollars for the petition drive. Those have to be turned into the Secretary of States office by November fourth.
