The Port of Veracruz in Mexico is one of the largest and most important ports to the country and to United States agricultural exports. Spokesman Jorge Enrique Banos says they handle corn, soybeans meal and wheat and most of it comes down the Mississippi River through New Orleans.
He says they have four grain companies that handle bulk ag products and most have a direct tie to U.S. coops or grain companies.
The port expansion will allow larger Panamax ships, but will also include rail access.
The Port of Veracruz is also important because of its proximity with U.S. product reaching Mexico in 48 hours via ship, which means cheaper freight than South America.
