More than 60-percent of United States soybeans are exported and Mexico is the number two market right behind China. On the South Dakota Soybean See for Yourself Tour in Mexico farmers toured the Port of Progresso on the Yucatan Peninsula. Port Shipping Manager Gulbardio Carrillo says they receive 55 ships annually from the U.S. and the port is strategically located for U.S. importation.
There is no rail access to the Port of Progreso, so the grain comes in by truck, 40 to 60 per day. However, he says because of their location its still much closer and cheaper for Mexican processors and feed mills to buy soybeans and meal from the U.S. verses competitors.
The port can handle Handymax vessels, but expansion is currently underway that will allow larger Panamax ships.
The construction will be completed by the end of 2018.
