The National Pork Producers Council is supporting the RELIEF Act legislation just introduced in the Senate. Both of Iowa’s Senators along with three others are co-sponsoring the Responding to Economic Losses and investing in the Economic Future for Producers Act of 2020. Iowa Pork Producers Association President Mike (paws-chun) Paustian says one of the most important components of the measure is the funding provided for producers who are forced to euthanize or donate their animals due to the pandemic.
He says another important piece of the RELIEF Act is it increases funding for animal health surveillance and laboratories.
Paustian says the legislation calls for revising the Commodity Credit Corporation charter to allow producers to qualify for pandemic relief funds.
Paustian says once those farms are lost, they don’t come back.
