Pork producers have mixed reaction to the trade aid package announced on Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The payment rate is $8 per hog on 50-percent of production. Iowa producer and past National Pork Producers Council President John Weber says that equates to $4 per pig, which won’t go far in many operations.
He says the rate doesn’t even come close to the drop producers have seen in hog prices resulting from the tariffs and subsequent loss in exports with key customers like China and Mexico.
However, Weber says they are appreciative of the other portions of the trade aid package.
The direct payments to all farmers will be disseminated starting September 4.
