U.S. pork officials are expressing optimism about upcoming trade resolution talks with China set for next month. They’re also pleased with the statement released Friday that the Chinese are lifting punitive tariffs placed on U.S pork imports. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller sees that as a very positive move.

He says if the Chinese follow through with lifting those tariffs, that’ll have a significant economic impact.

Muller says because America’s pork officials have been growing their export markets with other customers, if the trade war with China can be resolved that will only add to those trade benefits.

The Chinese earlier placed punitive tariffs on 60 percent of most U.S. pork products bringing the effective tariff rate on most U.S. pork to 72 percent so lifting of that is both significant and welcome.
