This week Iowa pork producer John Weber, President Elect of the National Pork Producers Council testified in front of a House Ag Subcommittee. He told the group, Country of Origin Labeling needs to be repealed in order to avoid trade retaliation from Canada and Mexico.
Weber says if Canada and Mexico retaliate, the economic damage to the U.S. pork industry would not only be significant initially but down the road as well.
Weber says he’s not opposed to a voluntary labeling approach that would allow consumers to know where their food comes from but that the current mandatory COOL law doesn’t meet WTO standards.
