The restrictions placed on livestock production through California’s Proposition 12 was discussed during World Pork Expo.  National Pork Producers Council president, Terry Wolters of Pipestone, Minnesota says supporters of Proposition 12 believe they are encouraging better animal welfare, when the reality shows differently.  He says Proposition 12 would no longer allow pork producers to utilize breeding stalls.  Wolters further explains why breeding stalls are a better option.  Wolters says if Proposition 12 is upheld, it will mean higher costs for pork producers.  The National Pork Producers president says there isn’t any science based on the standards behind Proposition 12.  Wolters says there are a group of people wanting to have mandates on animal production, but they don’t understand animal agriculture.
