Pork producers are facing uncertainty regarding the future of agricultural trade under the Trump Administration. Mitchell pork producer Brad Greenway says with the campaign rhetoric about President-elect Trump dismantling NAFTA they are concerned about possible trade disruptions with Mexico and Canada. He says Mexico has continued to be one of the top export markets for U.S. pork.
South Dakota Pork Producers Council Second Vice President Craig Andersen says nearly 27-percent of the U.S. pork supply is exported, so they can’t afford trade problems with any of their customers. However, they remain optimistic about maintaining those markets.
Greenway says they’re also disappointed that the Trans Pacific Partnership will not be moving forward under the new Administration. And concerned China may now take the U.S.’s place in that trade pact.
Trump has also talked about increased enforcement of trade deals with China and putting an end to their currency manipulation, which some fear will cause a trade war with U.S. agriculture’s top buyer.
