Sources say the U.S. has lost its case at the World Trade Organization over its country of origin labeling law. Canada and Mexico had challenged the rule which was rewritten. National Pork Producers Council President Dr. Howard Hill says that ruling was expected as well as eventual retaliation by Canada and Mexico against the United States. He says that likely won’t happen right away.
Hill says that retaliation will effect not just meat products but a number of goods produced in the United States. He says now it’ll be up to Congress to correct the problems with country of origin labeling and that won’t occur until after the November election.
The WTO report won’t be made public until late September or early October although all three governments have been notified.
