The Obama administration has announced that starting January 1, South Africa will lose its privilege to ship into the United States ag products through the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The act allows countries to ship products at a zero tariff rate. Iowa Pork Producers President Dave Struthers says South Africa has been taking advantage of the U.S. duty free market while keeping U.S. pork out of its market.
Struthers says South Africa has been guilty of implementing non science based restrictions to U.S. pork.

In 2014, South Africa shipped $ 1.7 billion of goods to the United States under AGOA and another $ 1.3 billion under the Generalized Systems of Preference program.
