The Bureau of Prisons partially put pork back on the federal prison menu, at least pork roasts. The action comes after the Bureau came under fire from Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. National Pork Producers Council President Elect John Weber says they’re thankful for the Senator’s support on the issue and agree more transparency is needed on how the Bureau made this decision in the first place.
Weber says the removing pork entirely from prison menus could have potentially hurt the pork industry.
Prison officials originally cited the cost of pork and prisoner dislike for pork in surveys as the reason for its decision. Weber says they question those reasons.
The Bureau of prisons has already dropped bacon, pork chops and sausages from their menu in the past two years.
