Pork Leaders Concerned About Midnight Regulation on Organic Rules

The Obama Administration is in the process of issuing a midnight regulation that places strict animal welfare rules in the nation’s organic food production law. Iowa Pork Producers Association President Al Wulfekuhle says the USDA amendment to the Organic Food Production Act of 1990 pushes the agenda of animal activists on producers and consumers.

The law would strictly dictate which standard practices are allowed and prohibited in organic farming and meat production. However, he says other parts of the regulation are vague and will lead to higher prices in the grocery store.

Wulfekuhle says the rule is not science based and in fact, a provision on outdoor access conflicts with best management practices to prevent swine diseases.

Wulfekuhle says his group and NPPC will work with the Trump administration and the new Congress to repeal this regulation.
