The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York has ruled FDA is not required to hold hearings regarding the safety of feeding antibiotics at sub-therapeutic levels. Not requiring the hearings means FDA doesn’t have to consider banning the feeding of antibiotics to healthy animals. South Dakota Pork Producers Council President Lester Moeller of Miller says that’s a positive ruling.
Moeller says by not requiring FDA to hold those hearings it eliminates an unneeded layer of red tape that would hamper pork producers using an important health tool.
Moeller says most producers use antibiotics sparingly and efficiently due to their cost.
