Getting the trade war resolved and talks moving forward are the hopes for Nebraska’s pork producers. While Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and China’s top economic envoy are in preliminary stages of resolution talks, National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow says both sides continue to have trade discussions. Nebraska Pork Producers Association President Darin Uhlir says trade war impacts are worsening as more pork supply is coming forward cutting prices even further.
He says there have been no details come forward yet on an aid package from USDA and with resolution talks going slowly the need for new trade deals and completing existing ones like NAFTA are taking on even more importance.
Uhlir says he and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts are heading to Mexico this month for trade talks and he’s hopeful that will be helpful for negotiators working on the NAFTA remake.
The Nebraska trade group will be in Mexico August 20 through the 22.
