Pork Industry Wants The USDA To Regulate Cultured Meat Rather Than The FDA

Pork industry members along with other livestock groups are watching closely what happens with the development of lab produced or cultured meat. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says there’s a battle going on between federal agencies over who should have regulatory authority over that.

He says the pork industry thinks the USDA is better equipped to handle regulation of cultured meat than is the FDA.

Juhnke says the Ag Department is better suited to handle the labeling of any cultured meat or alternative proteins.

The pork industry is concerned that allowing FDA oversight without USDA regulation would allow the cultured meat industry to avoid rigorous inspections, labeling scrutiny, and other regulations faced by agriculture
