P-E-D- Virus which can be devastating for the pork industry remains a concern for producers. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says South Dakota is fortunate in that there’s only been around a half dozen cases.

Thaler says what’s troublesome is that PED has been spreading in other states.

He says practicing good Bio Security is really the only defense against PED virus as researchers are still working on trying to come up with a vaccine.

PED virus spreads rapidly and usually hits younger pigs.
