The pork industry is launching a new Pork Quality Initiative to provide a more uniform meat product for United States consumers and export customers. Terry O’Neel, Nebraska pork producer and newly elected National Pork Board President, says they are currently working with USDA on details of the program, which hasn’t been updated in many years.
O’Neel says this revision is being driven by consumer preference and they will be the ultimate benefactor.
So when consumer go to the meat case they will no longer see the variation of light and dark meat cuts in the same package. He says this will hopefully increase pork sales and improve profitability for producers.
O’Neel says they plan to roll out the new program specifications by the end of the year.
