The comment period for the new GIPSA or Farmer Fair Practice Rules ends Monday. The pork industry has submitted comments opposing the rules and National Pork Producers Council CEO Neil DIerks says they hope the Secretary will carefully consider their comments on the unintended consequences of the rule when making his decision.
He says the biggest problem the pork industry has with the rule is it will force more competition in the packing industry as packers try to avoid penalties from the rules.
Al Juhnke, Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director says the GIPSA rules were written for poultry growers and don’t apply to the pork industry.
Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue is set to release a decision on the Farmer Fair Practice rules this fall.
