The National Pork Board, Pork Producers Council, USDA and swine vets are working together to help keep the U.S. free of African Swine Fever. The disease has spread where it originated in China rapidly to other areas. National Pork Board President Steve Rommereim who raises hogs near Alcester, South Dakota says with all the travel going on, extra biosecurity protections need to be taken.
He says it’s critical pork producers check their feed inputs and know where that comes from as the virus can spread quickly through feed.
Rommereim says waiting to use some of the feed inputs can help in dealing with keeping AFS out.
Rommereim says AFS doesn’t spread from animals to humans so there’s no concern there, however one major concern is that there is no vaccine for African Swine Fever so keeping it out of the U.S. is critical.
