Thursday, the Trump Administration said it is imposing 25 percent tariffs on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says the move is disappointing in that pork producers were hoping trade concerns would be resolved and trade would move forward.
South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says the imposition of the tariffs has already negatively impacted the markets.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the President acted on national security grounds seeing a rising tide of imports as a threat to the domestic metals industry. Juhnke says the President needs to remember agriculture is also a national security concern.
European Leaders say they’ll proceed with a complaint to the World Trade Organization.
