Pork Executive Says Pork Processing Line Speeds Are Safe

Seven Attorneys General and two agriculture groups are being allowed to file briefs in a lawsuit challenging a USDA rule that eliminates line speed limits at pork processing plants. Both the National Pork Producers Council and North American Meat Institute also get to file briefs in support of the rule. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says those line speeds have been tested and studied thoroughly so the present rule is solid.

He says slaughter plants have done a great job ensuring the safety of workers during this pandemic.

Juhnke says each processing plant while different is still safe. He says what needs to be remembered is that these facilities must keep operating in order to keep the food chain moving and consumers fed.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union says the USDA didn’t take into consideration the safety risks and issues that have come about because of the rule.
