SDSU Animal Disease Research And Diagnostic Lab researchers have been able to speed up the testing time for presence of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus in order to produce same day results. South Dakota Pork Producers Council’s Executive Director Glenn Muller says it’s a major breakthrough that allows producers to react quicker to the disease and put in biosecurity steps to deal with it.
Muller says South Dakota’s pork producers have done a great job in dealing with the disease already with their biosecurity and cases were quite low this summer heading into the fall.
Muller says while there have been two vaccines developed for P-E-D virus, neither has proven to be highly effective so sanitation and biosecurity is the best defense now against the disease. He advises producers work with their local vets and officials at the SDSU Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Lab.
