National Pork Producer Council leaders are asking the Obama administration to strip South Africa of its preferential trade benefits, or at least limit them. NPPC Vice President and Counsel for Global Government Affairs, Nick Giordano says while they hate to ask for this, South Africa for some time has been denying market access for U.S. pork.
Giordano says South Africa has benefitted from preferential trade programs to the tune of $3 billion in 2014 that they were able to ship to the United States duty free.
He says NPPC isn’t opposed to trade preference programs, but wants to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
Giordano says South Africa is essentially putting up trade barriers, despite the fact it’s unsupported by international standards, any legitimate scientific reasons, or World Trade Organization legal justification.
