Tyson Foods are distributing $60 million in bonuses to their frontline workers and truckers to keep the food distribution system running efficiently during the coronavirus outbreak. That move is seen as positive by South Dakota Pork Producers Council President Craig Andersen. He says keeping each processor open and operating is critical.
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says while keeping the supply chain moving is important, the move is seen as a bit of a double-edged sword;
Lane says despite the move to keep supplies moving, many cattle producers are very upset at the profits packers are making at the expense of producers.
Demand for packaged and processed foods is currently high as people are staying home to avoid COVID 19. Many are stocking up on supplies and eating at home due to restaurants being closed for dine in.
