Plugging in the Electric Vehicle Corridors

As more electric powered vehicles show up on roads and highways, more charging stations will be needed.

The South Dakota Transportation Commission got an update on the status of the state’s electric vehicle corridor at their meeting in Pierre.

Mike Behm, Director of the Department of Planning and Engineering, said the US Department of Transportation has certain requirements for the corridors..

Behm says higher voltages are needed to qualify under the federal program…

Behm says there are other requirements for the designation..

The state got about nine million dollars to help build the charging stations. The first six will be installed in Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Chamberlain and Murdo.
