Senate Ag Committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow is concerned with the Trump administration’s review of monument designations through the Antiquities Act. She says the review report needs to be released to the general public. Public Lands Council Executive Director Ethan Lane says the Senator didn’t object when the monuments were designated by President Obama bypassing local input. He says Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is at least considering local views on the designations.
He says the original monument designations were made by then President Obama without any review process at all.
Lane says public lands grazing is negatively impacted by the monument designations and ranchers and local communities lose out as a result.
The Trump administration is currently reviewing 27 national monuments which includes thousands of acres of U.S. Forest Service land, managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
