Congress has approved the Great American Outdoors Act. South Dakota’s delegation was somewhat split on that vote. Both Senator Mike Rounds and Congressman Dusty Johnson voted against the measure while Senator John Thune voted for the bill. The Public Lands Council opposed the legislation due to its excessive cost and that it takes away future Congressional oversight. Executive Director Kaitlynn Glover says they’ll now try to convince President Trump to veto it.
She says the legislation which is expensive will create even more future expenses and will allow the federal government to gobble up lands that could be put to better use.
Glover says if the bill is not vetoed then her group and others will weigh in to see that the measure is properly implemented. She says it’s a problem when the federal government acquires more land that it can’t manage anyway.
Glover says America’s taxpayers pay for the maintenance of those federal lands and will be left with the cost. She says the feds do a poor job of managing the resources on the lands they already own.
