Both the U.S. and China confirmed today what has been widely reported the initial phase of a trade agreement between the two nations has been agreed upon. Back in February, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told lawmakers.
Lighthizer said today the agreement marks what he says is critical progress towards a more balanced trade relationship and a more level playing field. Part of the agreement includes Chinese commitment to purchase up to $50 billion dollars worth of U.S.. Agricultural products. Among those anxious for a return to China’s market is Tim Atkinsson of the National Sorghum Producers Association.
Joe Schuele with the U.S. Meat Export Federation says they’re encouraged by the announcement of an agreement by the US Trade Representative’s office and are awaiting more details. He says the retaliatory tariffs on U.S. pork and beef have made it difficult for the U.S.to be competitive in that market.
Schuele says the U.S. has faced technical barriers on both the beef and pork side and they’re hoping to get those resolved with this phase one deal.
