House Ag Committee Ranking Member and Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson says he’s disappointed in the failure to provide assistance for dairy producers in the Omnibus and believes it will have a bearing on the next farm bill. Peterson thought they had a deal to help both dairy and cotton producers, but he says politics killed it in the end.
Peterson says was trying to make changes in the Margin Protection Program to make it more effective.
His plan would have guaranteed $16 milk for producers with 180 to 200 cows for an insurance cost of $300 per month.
Peterson says there is now a rift between Senate and House Ag Committee leadership that may impede their ability to get a farm bill done.
And Peterson says he and House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway had found a way to pay for that dairy assistance as well as help for cotton producers. Now he says they will have to find a short-term fix until they can make the changes in the new farm bill.
