U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue met Friday with Canada’s Ag Minister Lawrence MacCauley and talked about trade and the NAFTA discussions. One of the sticking points in the NAFTA talks has been the dairy issue and Canada’s supply management system. Perdue says the U.S. should not dictate to Canada how they manage their dairy production. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom agrees.
He’s hopeful negotiators will continue to make progress on NAFTA and cut a deal that benefits all three countries.
Sjostrom says both Mexico and Canada are important trading partners for all of American agriculture.
Sjostrom says his group would like to see the NAFTA remake completed this year but if it takes longer that’s fine if it’s good deal.
