PED Virus Cases And Severity Dropping

The impact of the PED Virus is down so far this winter in swine herds in South Dakota and nationwide. Alcester, South Dakota pork producer Steve Rommereim says last winter the disease was in the sow herd and it resulted in disastrous death loss with the baby pigs. Sows have since built up immunity and the virus has move to the finishing phase.
National Pork Board Vice President Brad Greenway raises hogs near Mitchell. He says farmers also have a better handle on the disease and how to manage it.
As part of the tighter biosecurity pork producers are more closely watching their feed sources to make sure the virus isn’t transmitted through that vector.
