The North American Free Trade Agreement has been a success story for agriculture. That’s the message from Nebraska farmer Alan Tiemann, past Chairman of the U.S. Grains Council. He advises the Trump administration and negotiators to be very cautious when renegotiating the deal.

He says while some improvements can be made to NAFTA, it’s critical negotiators don’t make drastic changes or impose tariffs that will result in increased costs for farmers.

Tiemann says U.S. ag exports have tripled to Canada and quintupled to Mexico since NAFTA was implemented. He says the U.S. has also benefited from a good trading relationship that has allowed the export of new products like ethanol and DDGs to Mexico.

Tiemann says he met recently with a Mexican trade delegation that was in Nebraska and they’re very concerned about any major changes to NAFTA. He says they’ll look to trade with other countries if free trade is no longer an option.
