Due to concerns over the upcoming renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Mexico is considering other options for purchasing its pork, rather than from the U.S.
Both Mexico and Canada are important markets for U.S. pork according to Iowa producer John Weber, immediate past president of the National Pork Producers Council.
He’s not surprised Mexico is looking at sourcing its pork elsewhere and it’s critical the U.S. doesn’t take its export customers for granted.
Weber says not only is Mexico an important customer for all U.S. pork, it’s also critically important for his home state of Iowa.
Weber says the NAFTA renegotiation talks which are expected to begin in August will likely set the tone for future bilateral trade deals the U.S. engages in.
