Legislation has been introduced in both Houses of Congress to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard. It’s called the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act. Proponents claim the ethanol mandate in the RFS no longer makes sense when better, lower carbon alternatives exist. Southwest Iowa Corn grower Kevin Ross, past President and Chairman of the National Corn Grower’s Association says that claim is ridiculous as ethanol is the best carbon reduction and lowest cost fuel available.
He says liquid fuels have a positive future in front of them and they fit in well with even electronic vehicles while the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act is driven solely by politics and not based on consumer, environmental or economic benefits.
The RFS Repeal bill is being carried in the Senate by Dianne Feinstein of California and Ross says higher blends of ethanol are doing well all over, even E-15 in California.
Ross says a recent ABF Economics study shows moving to E-15 nationally would save consumers $ 12.2 billion in annual fuel costs.
