FFA students at McCook Central High School in Salem, South Dakota have a creative way to bring home the bacon for their chapter’s scholarship fund. Student advisor, Terry Riekman says they are ‘passing the pigs’ around the community to raise money for their futures.
The students have two pigs that will be travelling around Salem this Thursday from 8 am until about 1:00 pm, visiting businesses who must make a donation to have the pigs taken somewhere else. Where they end up next is the choice of that business making the donation. Rieckman says the students are in charge of moving the pigs.
Businesses can purchase ‘insurance’ beforehand to ensure they aren’t stuck with the swine. Rieckman says last year, students raise enough for six $300 dollar scholarships, and the fundraiser has been done for several years.
He says the fundraiser happens every year during National FFA Week.
