The Special Education Interim committee of the South Dakota legislature met in Pierre Tuesday.
In their second meeting of the summer, the committee is hearing about the status of federal legislation and an update on funding levels and out of district placements.
Committee member Sarah Carda of Yankton says while parents are passionate about their kids education, they also understand the financial implications..

Carda says her son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum when he was three and a half and is now twenty. She says that diagnosis is very difficult…

Carda, who is a member of the Yankton School Board, says the treatment situation has changed.

Carda says the early teachers for special ed students are like “brain surgeons” in the development of those kids.
The committee will meet again later this fall.
