The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging people not to eat commercially produced caramel apples. So far, 29 people in ten states have been infected with listeriosis in the past couple months. South Dakota’s state epidemiologist, Dr. Lon Kightlinger, says five people have died and all cases have been hospitalized by the disease.
Kightlinger says the bacteria that causes the disease is most likely caused by the apples.
Kightlinger says those with weakened immune systems are most susceptible, which includes children and the elderly, but it also causes problems for pregnant women.
There have been no cases reported yet in South Dakota, Iowa, or Nebraska, but Minnesota has had four cases and two deaths. The apples are predicted to have been distributed nationwide. He says if caramel apples are a Christmas tradition, you should make your own.
