Iowa Citizen’s For Community Improvement members are opposing a proposed $240 million pork processing plant in Mason City. ICCI Community Organizer Erica Blair says they’re against the Prestage Farms processing plant project due to concerns it will lead to more and larger hog farms in the state.
She says ICCI also fears the additional negative effect the processing operation and the large hog farms associated with the project will have on the environment.
Blair say even though Prestage Farms officials say they’ll create a large number of jobs, those need to be weighed against the impact on the state’s water quality and the overall environment.
Blair notes that Prestage Farms is a privately held out-of-state corporation and the nation’s fifth largest pork producer.
