The Yankton County Sheriff’s office says two people were killed in a head on collision on Highway 50, about five miles east of Yankton.
In a release, Sheriff Jim Vlahackis says a car was driving west bound in the east bound lane. That car collided head on with another car, and both cars caught on fire. The accident was reported about 5:30 this morning.
The driver of the vehicle in the wrong lane, identified as 31 year old Curtis Nelsen of Mission Hill died at the scene.
Emergency responders were able to extricate the driver of the second vehicle after other drivers stopped and help put out the flames. 30 year old Ashley Riibe of Yankton was taken to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, then transferred to Sanford in Sioux Falls where she later died.
Two more vehicles then collided with the original two in the accident.
