Names Released in Fatal Clark County Truck Collision

A Garden City, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died Friday afternoon in a crash that involved two semi trucks near Garden City.

A 1991 Freightliner, pulling a cattle hauler loaded with cattle, was northbound on 432nd Avenue near the intersection with 167th Street. The vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign, went into the intersection and collided with a westbound 2001 Peterbilt semi pulling an empty belly dump trailer.

The Freightliner eventually went into the ditch and was engulfed in flames. The driver, Neil Stern, 60, died at the scene. Manuel Waldner, 53, also of Garden City, was driving the other semi, He was not injured.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies at the scene were the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Clark Fire/EMS and Garden City Fire/EMS.
