One Dead in Watertown Shooting

A Watertown boy was killed during a neighborhood dispute Saturday evening. The Watertown Police Department received a report of an altercation between an adult male, identified as 31 year old Alexis Velazquez and a juvenile male, identified as Jayden Harley. Police were called to the scene at 8:52 p.m. following a verbal encounter that escalated when Velazquez brandished a handgun. Velazquez fired one shot striking Jayden. Jayden was transferred to Prairie Lakes Hospital where he died from his injuries Velazquez was arrested at the scene and later jailed at the Codington County Detention Center. Bond was still pending Sunday morning. Jayden’s family released his name to avoid any rumors. Assistant Watertown Police Chief Tim Toomey says the investigation is continuing. The Watertown Police Department was aided by the DCI, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Codington County Sheriff’s Office and the Codington County Dive Team.
