One person died Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Toronto.

Names of the two people involved are not being released at this time.

A 2005 Peterbilt Conventional 379 semi-truck was pulling a full trailer and a pup trailer northbound on Interstate 29 when the driver braked suddenly for two dogs running across the interstate. A 2013 Mazda Sport, which also was going northbound, rear-ended the pup trailer.

The 60-year-old female driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. The 49-year-old male driver of the semi was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

Both northbound lanes of I-29 were closed for a time after the crash.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
