One person died late Saturday night in a two-vehicle crash northeast of Hot Springs.

Names of the two people involved are not being released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when the motorcycle struck a deer that had ran onto the roadway. The 50-year-old driver was thrown from the motorcycle into the southbound driving lane. She was then struck by a southbound 2019 Honda Pilot which could not avoid hitting her.

The motorcycle driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 70-year-old male driver of the Honda, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
